I've just found out I've been nominated for the Excessively Diverting Blog Award by Marilyn Braun over at Marilyn's Royal Blog. I must say that this is a pleasant surprise and of all the plaudits I've received during MY lifetime, this is the most delightful. Having ones image appear on stamps, coins and tacky souvenirs wears off after a while.

Like Marilyn, I'm going to cut and paste the blurb about this award. At MY age I think I've earned the right to do so.

Today is Ginger's birthday, he's 24 years old. One of my visitors reminded ME about this - Thank you! I thought I'd set it up in my Google Calendar but apparently I must have done something wrong. I'll have to mention this to the people at Google when I visit their London headquarters in October.

I have no idea what to get Ginger. We recently had some beer delivered to Windsor Castle, 2000 pints to be exact. It was supposed to go to a pub called Windsor Castle - who knew there was another one? Can you imagine the party we all would have had? Oh what fun!

Oh what a frightful mess this whole Hello deal has become! Contrary to falsely reported belief I had no problem with the Hello deal. Because of it I didn't have to bring my camera along, can't fit everything into my purse, the baby glock takes up way too much room.

I made two conditions, they had to publish flattering photos of ME and give ME a lifetime subscription!

Oh what a lovely day! I've received such beautiful flowers and birthday cards. A particularly funny one from Andy Pandy.

Such a happy time, Philip is better and we had James' christening on the weekend and it was lovely. Baby James looked so nice in the replica of our family heirloom christening gown. It's too bad he couldn't have worn the original, but at 160 odd years old, it was too old. Unfortunately, some things don't get better with age.

We have so much room at Buckingham Palace that it gets lonely sometimes. One needs to talk to people other than the servants. So we've decided to open up part of Buckingham Palace as a Bed and Breakfast. The announcement doesn't make mention of it, but if you do decide to stay, don't go out on to the balcony - we haven't fixed that yet!

Welcomed the French President and his wife, Madame Sarkozy. How lovely to meet them. Madame Sarkozy was apparently a model at one point. I've heard that there's an uproar with some nude photos of her going up for auction at Christies. I don't know what all the fuss is about, I've posed for plenty of photos in my day.

I've completely missed Eugenie's birthday! I've been so busy following William and Kate's trip to Klosters that I completely forgot! I must remember to send her an e-card.

I had a lovely Easter. Went to the Maundy service and distributed the Royal Maundy money. They come in red and white purses and I almost feel like Santa Claus handing them out! A few years back some recipients were selling the money on the Internet. Who knew my generation could be so computer savvy?

I'm so happy we no longer wash peoples feet. Can you imagine the dish pan hands I'd have afterwards?

I've been asked my thoughts on smoking. Although I don't smoke myself, I've had several members of the family who have smoked - My great-grandfather, grandfather, father, and sister, to name but a few. I believe that this contributed to their premature demise. I plan on being around along time (sorry Charles), therefore I do not smoke.

There was that famous incident with the intruder asking for a smoke. While waiting for my errant police guards, we had a lot of time to discuss the pros and cons of smoking. I don't know if he quit, but at least I tried.

Yes, I still have some around because you never know when someone like that will drop in again. If they do want to smoke I send them out on to the balcony. Which reminds me, I need to get that fixed...

There have been some recent reports that I am not amused by the dress code at Royal Ascot. That I am 'imposing my will' and I will be enforcing a strict dress code within the Royal Enclosure. It's true. It's gotten completely out of hand in recent years, what with all of the short skirts, tattoos and cups running over. It's very distracting to the horses.

Also, if I can't show off my tattoo then no one else can!

While I won't be standing around with a ruler measuring skirts I will glare at anyone who disobeys me. Be forwarned.

Bollocks! Bigger is better! Size does matter. The stubby ones are very unsatisfying. Trying to get it up and running took ages.

Yes it's true! I LOVE Wii!!! Wombat received it as a gift from Kate and I had to try it. Spent the better part of Christmas Day bowling. It's quite a workout isn't it? A few of the corgi's don't quite know what to make of it. Someone told ME that Edward and Sophie brought baby James over, I must have been playing Donkey Kong. Oh well, they'll come back. They always do.

What fun! Wombat keeps begging ME to let him play. But he backs off when my Mii caricature pulls rank on him. I can't wait for Smash Bros to come out!!

We've just returned from Malta and Uganda - what a trip! I took some lovely pictures for my photo album and brought home all sorts of souvenirs. It was so nice to be in Malta again. Philip and I spent part of our early married life there and it was bliss.

In my 81 years of life I think I've met pretty well everyone there is to meet. One of the perks of the position is being able to summon those people who I haven't met or would like to meet again. As I mentioned in a previous post, the Spice Girls are reuniting and I'm very very excited about it. So much so that I've invited them to perform as part of the Royal Variety Performance on December 3rd!

Well this year's Halloween was very uneventful! I bought lots and lots of sweets and no one showed up! I even wore a costume this year. I dressed up as Helen Mirren, dressed up as ME. But no one could guess who I was. Maybe I should have borrowed her Oscar?

There has been a recent article in the Daily Mail about a Council that spent £5,000 on a loo that I didn't use during my 3 hour visit. Apparently my Royal Officials instructed the members of Council that their facilities would be inappropriate for ME and thus the unnecessary expense of replacing the loo.

I would like to say that although I have standards regarding what I will and will not do during a royal engagement (i.e. sign autographs, touch small children), I would have used that particular loo - knowing that the Council went to the trouble. But upon seeing the picture of the loo, I've decided that it was ultimately a wise decision not to use it - do they not clean it? I will also say that 3 hours is not a long time for ME to go without using the loo - true, that's probably too much information for you but I just thought I'd share. My grandmother, Queen Mary, taught ME to hold it in. Just like she taught me not to fidget by rewarding ME with biscuits. This advice has come in handy over the years.

However, I've taken a page from American celebrities and come up with a rider of instructions should it be required.

I have no problem with furniture, as long as it's not covered in plastic or from IKEA. I also don't like bean bag chairs or shag carpeting.

I'm a big advocate of feng shui, so make sure your couch and chairs do not have their back to the door or window, that your mirrors do not face chairs and that your windows face natural views. Also, blue walls tend to depress ME, so a cheery yellow is always appreciated.

I like bendy straws

Only use Royal Doulton Fine Bone China. Wedgewood is acceptable but only if its in the India pattern.

I only drink Malvern water, so have a case handy.

I only drink Twinnings tea

Make sure you only use products that have my royal warrant.

Many people wonder, what must I have thought about the movie The Queen. I have to say that I only watched it recently when it came out on DVD. As you can imagine, I can't just pop out to the cinema anytime I please, so I sent one of my servants to buy a copy so that I might enjoy it in the privacy of my own home. Having watched it, I thought I would share my thoughts.

I have been portrayed many times, Jeanette Charles did a wonderful job in Naked Gun: From the files of the police squad. I appeared on The Simpsons and unfortunately on South Park. I didn't have a very large role in Whatever Love Means - it's always about Charles and Camilla isn't it? So, it was wonderful to be portrayed so realistically in a movie. Helen Mirren flatters ME in the role. She has my walk, talk and pensive look down pat. Also, I haven't been that slim since the 1970's.

The film covers the events following the death of Diana. The outpouring of grief and my reaction, or lack of reaction during that week. Everyone made a big deal about the fact that I didn't just rush back to London, or put a flag at half-mast at Buckingham Palace Looking back on it now, I can see that maybe I handled things wrong - I'm a traditionalist you know. But, it's been 10 years since Diana died. Why are all of you still on about her all the time?

I would however, like to clear up some innacuracies in the movie:

I did not dislike Diana, as Cherie Blair claims, nor would I have 'greased the brakes' as Tony Blair's lackey jokes in the movie. I have other ways of disposing of people.

If my vehicle were to break down in a remote area, I would fix it myself. As my character mentioned in the movie, I was a mechanic during the war. The movie portrayed ME as being helpless, having to call one of the men to retrieve ME. I've heard that, in order to research the role, Helen Mirren took an auto mechanic's course. So obviously, they cut out the scene where I jack up the car myself.

While I was sitting there, waiting to be rescued, the stag came along. Do they really think I would have let an opportunity to bag such a creature, go by? It would have looked nice on my wall but of course we have to pander to the public don't we? Be politically correct. We wanted you to like ME and seeing ME with a gun in my hand wouldn't have been appropriate now would it? So, some 'business man' shot it instead.

Prince Philip does not call ME 'Cabbage'

I don't wander around in my bathrobe all the time and I actually do work while I'm at Balmoral.

Otherwise the movie was a realistic portrayal of ME. As I'm still your sovereign and still a grandmother I say from the heart. You may only know ME by my image on commemorative china. And I might come across to you as a remote figure on your coins and stamps. As such, many people don't think I have feelings. Which is quite hurtful. As Helen Mirren says in the movie, I come from a different generation where we don't just wear our heart on a sleeve.

All in all, I give it four sceptres out of five.

I have been informed that one of my homes, Buckingham Palace, is starting to fall apart. How embarrassing! I've tried to look into the problems myself but it was just too risky for me to scale the wall. I'm not as agile as I used to be. One of the balconies needs repairs - what are we to do? What if something were to happen to all of us while we're standing there? It could take out a good number of us. The throne might then go to back to the Hanover line. Good gracious, we can't have that happening!

No time to waste, I'll grab the mortar!

Meet the family - Prince Edward

So here is my youngest son, Prince Edward Antony Richard Louis. He's our 'whoops' baby. We had a little too much wine that night so yes, he was unplanned - but we've never told him that. Notice that his initials spell out E.A.R.L - isn't that clever? He was also born at Buckingham Palace on March 10, 1964. We hid him away from the public gaze for the first few months of his life. I was finally persuaded to bring him out on the balcony to show him to the crowds - 'see, he does exist!' I didn't do a Michael Jackson with him, even if he is my fourth child.

Like Andy Pandy, Edward was educated at home until we eventually sent him away to boarding school. He went to Gordonstoun, and studied at Jesus College, Cambridge. He developed a love of theatre while at university, which has led to some nasty rumours about his orientation. Some have said he's light in the loafers. But he kept all of us in the dark until he announced his engagement to Sophie; so far the sanest of my daughters-in-laws. Camilla is ok, but she's brought too much baggage into the family, but that's another story altogether.

Edward then went into the Marines, but it didn't suit him. Oh the uproar about that! For the record, Philip wasn't the least bit angry at Edward for it. Maybe a little disappointed, but not angry. Edward then moved on to the theatre and television production. I highly enjoyed his television series Crown and Country - so informative!

He married Sophie on 19th of June and they have a lovely little girl called Louise. They're expecting another little one in December - I can hardly wait!

Royal tell-alls and why I love them

I have just listened to my good friend, Marilyn Braun's Royal Report for September 2nd . She discussed royal tell-alls and I think she was completely right - people do like to deny that they read these books, and possibly even enjoy them. Well I've decided to confess something:

I, Lilibet (aka The Queen), read and enjoy royal tell-alls. There's just nothing like being able to laugh at all of the inaccuracies. People who think they know ME and my family, when I've never met any of them. Or have I? I've met so many people in my life it's difficult to keep track. Oh well. Whenever we need a good laugh, we pull out a royal tell-all. Kitty Kelly's The Royals, is truly priceless! It isn't available in the UK so on our last visit to the USA I had one of my minions pick up a copy for ME.

While I'm not ashamed to admit that I read them, I'm not nearly as brave as Marilyn in flaunting it for all to see.

My goodness I've been busy lately, first I advised Kate not to participate in the boat race - which she wisely heeded. Now I'm on to interfering and overriding Wombat and Ginger's decision to invite Camilla to their mother's memorial service. Those two kids can't be expected to understand the ins and outs of protocol, or when to pander to the public.

Those boys have a lot to learn.

Thank you for your votes regarding my hairstyle. It's wonderful to know that 4 out of 6 of you like my hair. I wasn't planning on changing it, I just wanted a general opinion on the matter. Like my abdication poll, it was a rhetorical question.

Whilst I haven't been terribly imaginative with my hairdos over the years, I have tried the occasional boufant here and there. I grew it longer during the war years, and Philip actually liked it when it was that length, but he doesn't have to wear the tiaras now does he? I used to dye it a color called Chocolate Kiss, but I decided to stop fighting a losing battle and go with the grandmother look. I don't look as cuddly as my late mother did, but I have to be ME. Anyways, I can't go changing my look radically. It would probably drive the stamp and coin industry around the bend.

Did I miss Anne's birthday? It was yesterday wasn't it? I guess I can't change the date on the e-card can I? Maybe she won't notice, what with "helping" to plan Peter's wedding. One thing I've learnt, never interfere in wedding plans. The bride and groom have their own ideas.

Maybe they might get some ideas from the Royal Wedding Souvenir Album - 5 family weddings, yours truly included. They can see how Royal Weddings are really done! Philip and I have been married for 60 years this year - we must have done something right!

Back to Anne, I guess I'll just have to 'face the music' with her. Her glare can freeze water. Some say she got that from ME, but I can only make crushed ice. Very handy for mixed drinks.

Meet the family - Prince Andrew

This is my third child and admittedly my favorite, my Andy Pandy. Andrew was born at Buckingham Palace on February 19, 1960, incidently the first child born to a reigning sovereign since Queen Victoria had Princess Beatrice in 1857. I had quite a job getting back into shape after I had him. My sister, the late Princess Margaret, got married in May, so I managed to squeeze into my outfit anyways.

He was named after Philip's father, Prince Andrew of Greece. A nice tribute. After educating him at home and eventually at Gordonstoun, we sent Andrew off to Canada when he was a teenager to attend Lakefield College School in Ontario - if you're ever in the area, you MUST visit (There's a restaurant called the Muddy Duck, which serves a good fish and chips. Anyways, luckily we got him back and he continued on at Gordonstoun. After that he joined the Royal Navy, just like my dear Philip. Andrew actually fought in the Falkland Island conflict, we were just on the edge of our seats with that. Never knowing whether he would come back or not. But he did and we were so proud of him. He's also the best looking of my children so we needed his good looks to balance things out genetically.

In 1986 he married Sarah Ferguson - well I don't have to tell you what happened with that! We were all so disappointed. I gave him the title of Duke of York, which is very special to ME given that the previous holder was my dear departed Papa. Andy Pandy and Fergie had two lovely and beautiful girls - Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. Fergie and Andrew were divorced in 1996. So sad but they continued to live together and everyone seems happy with that arrangement.

Today Andrew is the UK's Special Representative for International Trade and Investment - (check out his website to the right) and he does quite a good job of it. I recently gave him and Edward, my youngest, the Garter. Princess Anne isn't the only one of my children who can whine endlessly.

My poll - Should I give Prince Philip the title Prince Consort?

My most recent poll indicates that 3 out of 6 people think I should give my husband the title of Prince Consort. 2 votes suggest asking Prince Philip himself and 1 vote says, why bother?

I'm still undecided by the results of this poll. It's true that, after all this time, it really wouldn't change anything, well except all of the ID, business cards, stationary, plaques, clothing labels...maybe it's just not worth the effort. Not to mention having to explain it all to everyone! 'Is that Prince Philip?' 'Is that the Duke of Edinburgh?' 'Is that Prince Consort?' 'What should we call him?'

I've asked Prince Philip, and he says he'll think about it and get back to ME. Titles have never really been that important to him. When we were married in 1947, he renounced his Greek title - Prince Philip of Greece and became simply Lt Philip Mountbatten. Papa created Philip Duke of Edinburgh and he was known as HRH the Duke of Edinburgh for quite some time. People in the press still called him Prince Philip, so in 1957 I said, why not? and gave him the title of Prince. It suits him quite well.

So I'll keep you posted on what the outcome is. Maybe I'll do it as an anniversary gift - it's our 60th wedding anniversary you know?

Meet the family - Princess Anne

Anne is my second child, born on August 15, 1950 whilst we were residing at Clarence House. Contrary to popular belief, she DOES smile, although you'd never know it from these photos now would you?

She's into horses, like ME and has actually competed in the Olympics! I'm very proud of her. She takes after her father temperament wise. Anne married in 1973 to Captain Mark Philips - but that didn't work out. They had two children, Peter, born in 1977 (a Silver Jubilee baby!) and Zara, born in 1981. Peter has recently become engaged to Autumn Kelly. Everyone seemed to think that Zara would get engaged first, but my bet was on Peter. Which reminds ME, I have to collect my winnings from everyone.

Charles and Anne were always very competitive with each other. Or I should say that Anne was extremely competitive with Charles. She always wanted what Charles has. Even to this day! The whining and pleading, 'why is Charles a member of the Garter and not me?' Creating her Princess Royal obviously wasn't good enough. After years and years of listening to this, I finally gave in. I'm glad I waited though, I didn't want Anne to think I was a push-over.

Anne and Mark divorced in 1992 and she went and married Commander Timothy Laurence. He's been a quiet and unassuming addition to the royal family - just how we like things. Here's a picture of the two of them together. Why must Anne looks so sour in all of her pictures? Believe it or not, they DO smile!

Oh this is so exciting! First the Spice Girls are reuniting. Then Edward and Sophie are expecting their second baby! Now I find out that my eldest grandson will be getting married to his longtime girlfriend, Autumn Kelly. She's a Canadian too! Always good to keep things in the family.

Does this mean I'll become a great-grandmother before long?

My abdication poll

Many people, media types, would have you believe that people want ME to abdicate. I've been heartened by the four votes from people who think I'm doing a great job. Thank you, I do try you know.

Meet the family - Prince Charles

Has it really been five days since I've updated this blog? I must remember to not work so late on my red boxes.

So here is the next member of my family: Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall, etc. etc is my eldest son. He was born at Buckingham Palace. I was in labour with him for 30 hours! He's been causing ME grief ever since. But I still love him. I don't know where he gets the ears from. Doesn't it look like he could take flight?

As you probably know, he was married to Diana and they had two sons. Lots of trouble with that marriage. I just stayed out of it but I couldn't help but read the newspapers like everyone else. In 2005 he married his non-negotiable mistress Camilla. They look happy don't they? I guess that's what's important. Philip and I have bets that this one is going to last. If not, we're not paying for another one, that's for sure!

Meet the family - Prince Philip

I've decided that I'm going to introduce you to my family, starting off with my main squeeze, Prince Philip. This year we will have been married for 60 years - can you believe it? It's had its ups and downs but we've weathered it and come through the better for it. I met him in 1939 when he was a cadet at Dartmouth and in my 13 year old wisdom I set my cap on him. He came around eventually and we were married in 1947. He's handsome, brilliant, speaks his mind and I love him for all of it.

Well, yesterdays Garden Party went off without a hitch. It was so nice to see everyone. Charles and Camilla weren't there. It's too bad, she missed out on the crowd singing Happy Birthday. The crowd started doing the wave, and I just had to get into it. I got a bit carried away. I don't have a photo of it, but here's one of the crowds, parting like the sea, for ME to come through. I've been doing this for over 50 years and it never ceases to amaze ME.

Yes, it was a lovely day, met some interesting people, and had lots of good eats. It took forever to pick all of the strawberries, but I enjoy pitching in when I have some free time. Which isn't very often between this blog and the ruling thing

Tomorrow we're having another Garden Party. I've spent all weekend practicing my withering stare in case anyone asks ME about the BBC incident. I haven't quite perfected it yet. I'm not sure what message I want to send. I'm working on my 'How Dare You' look but I always have my 'We're not amused' default just in case.

Tomorrow is also Camilla's birthday - 60 years old! Can you believe it? I remember my 60th birthday - like it was 21 years ago.

I haven't decided what to get her at the moment. Maybe I can rouse the crowd to sing to her? Debating whether to send her an e-card or not. Might as well err on the safe side and do so.

Apparently the BBC has caused quite a stir by editing their documentary to show ME storming out of a photo session with Annie Leibovitz after she asked ME to remove my crown. This is quite untrue. The BBC has since apologized for its actions.

I was distinctly unamused. I've worked with many photographers in my life and taken off many things, but I draw the line at my tiara! You heard it here first.

After this incident, let's just see if the BBC gets the Royal Christmas Message anytime soon!

Just back from Scotland - had to take the dust covers off the furniture in the Palace of Holyroodhouse. It's always good to make your home looked lived in, even if you're not there much of the time.

I must confess, I LOVE Scotland! I love it so much that we have another place there, maybe you're heard of it? Balmoral Castle?

At Holyroodhouse, we had a reception, held Investitures and had quite a Garden Party. My dogs are definately barking now!

My Purse

When people see me with my ubiqutious purse, many people may wonder, what does she carry in it? After all, it's not as if I need to carry money. Also I've read that people think that I send signals with my purse, moving it from one arm to the other, to tell my lackeys that someone is taking up too much of my time. True, but its also nice to change arms every once in a while. In any event, I've decided to reveal, for the first time, exactly what my purse holds:

Lipstick

Glasses - of course

Default speech - in case called upon to deliver at short notice. I can't remember the last time someone asked ME to do this. Hopefully my jokes about Monica Lewinsky are still relevant.

Handkerchief - my ladies in waiting can't carry it all!

An address book - one never knows when you'll need to call the President of France

Baby Glock - I thought the name was cute and it's also for protection. I've never felt safe since my policemen dropped the ball on my security.

A cell phone - I always have it on vibrate so as not to disturb people at banquets. So rude!

Pen - Many times I'm asked to sign an official photograph. You wouldn't believe the number of times the pen runs out of ink. So I've decided to bring my own. It's a really nice pen, so nice that I've had to wrestle it back from Laura Bush.

Business cards - So handy! I can share my email address, website and blog without having to rummage for pen and paper.

Wombat and Ginger's Concert for Diana seems to be a resounding success. At least that's what I heard from the people around me. The 'Old Guard' was banned and it was the young royals in attendance, so like most of you, I watched it on TV. You may be surprised to know this but I enjoy Nelly Furtado and P. Diddy just as much as anyone else! I could have shown Wombat a thing or two about dancing too!

I'm not bitter though.

Sorry I haven't blogged in a few days. Tony Blair resigned yesterday and I had to find a farewell greeting card and have everyone sign it. Got him a nice parting gift - a signed photograph and a carriage clock. Okay, not very original but he pretended to like it, which is the important thing. Always pretend to like gifts you're given. I do it all the time.

How I would have answered Matt Lauer's questions

In all of these years I've never actually sat down to give an interview. However, Matt Lauer's interview with my grandson's has inspired me to reveal to you, how I, The Queen, would have handled some of the questions.

Matt Lauer: Let me talk a little bit about your image in terms of in the United States.

ME: Well, obviously they know who I am. The Canadians must have filled them in at some point. We're not just about Diana you know. Obviously people are somewhat fascinated in us, for whatever reason.

Matt Lauer: Do you see a time in your own imagination when this cycle of fascination ends?

ME: I've been doing this for 81 years and it hasn't ended yet, which is a good thing. The fascination really is our bread and butter you know.

Matt Lauer: Was there a time in your lives when you were younger that your folks sat you down and talked about the responsibility of helping others? Did you have that kind of a talk?

ME: Yes, Mummy and Papa sat Margo (the late Princess Margaret) and myself down and we chatted about it. They said it's not just about the palaces and priceless jewels. There's work to be done and we all must chip in or we'll be sent packing.

Matt Lauer: As a mom -- what are your greatest memories?

ME: Are you referring to ME or to Mummy? Mummy was such fun, she taught us everything she knew about being in the public eye. She really did know how to give good value.

Matt Lauer: Did you notice that when by the way you would see coverage and you'd see her on camera and say, "That's not quite mom?"

ME: Yes, sometimes. I mean, she could be quite tough on occasion. She wasn't the cuddly queen the public thought they knew.

Matt Lauer: But is it daunting to think about how long this is probably going to last for you?

ME: Mummy lived to be 101, so I could be here for a while. Which is good, I'm personally against death you know.

One of my favorite times of the year is Royal Ascot. Riding in the carriage was quite bumpy and my wrist still hurts but it was worth it. I just love horse racing. But what I love just as much about Ascot are the hats. Multi-feathered, satellite dish shaped creations - absolutely hilarious. My granddaughter Zara tends to walk on the wild side with her hat. Here she is, pictured with ME, wearing something that seems to be a leopard spotted tv antenna. I don't mind this at all, and I'm sure that I've worn much worse than this. Remember the hat I wore during my Silver Jubilee celebrations, the pink one with the bells? What was I thinking?

Anyways, had a great time at Ascot. Andrew brought a friend with him - someone who makes Fergie look like the most stylish woman on the planet. I could barely make it past all of the chiffon and feathers to tea. I was always taught by Mummy that one musn't point and laugh when someone is wearing a funny hat. At times I couldn't see a thing, I should have told her 'Off with her hat!'

Anyways, my boxes have just arrived, so I must go.

The royal routine demystified

Members of the royal family undertake many engagements over the year. Some, like the Princess Royal seem to think it's a contest, but for the most part we all try to do our best. These engagements are usually called 'away days'. So called because we leave the palace and go away somewhere. Normally to a small town to meet and greet, cut ribbons, and in general let people know we're still around. After 81 years I've had much practice in giving the public good value. I even have my very own routine, which I'd like to share with you now.

Smile. Wave. Smile, Nod head. Accept bouquet of flowers from small child. Accept obeisance from members of the public. Smile. Wave. Nod head. Make small talk with dignitary. Cut ribbon/unveil plaque. Smile. Wave. Get into car and drive home.

I don't always do this routine in that particular order. Sometimes I like to mix things up a little bit. If I feel a bit down I like to do a bit of a walkabout, and accept more flowers and obeisance - that always makes me feel good, if a little tired. But I'm a traditionalist, so ordinarily this routine, passed down from generation to generation, doesn't change.

So there you have it. No mystery involved. And here, after all these years you probably thought it was something special didn't you?
